Production

Production lies very much at the heart of what we do. It can sometimes be a complicated thing to explain, as the term has come to mean many different things over the years. If you’re interested in our input as producers, please get in touch, and we’ll be more than happy to discuss your music, and offer advise on how best to get your record made.

What is a producer anyway?

Well, that’s not the easiest question to answer, as there are many different types, and many approaches to getting a record made. At the most basic level, a producer is someone who’s employed to make sure a record gets made the best way it can be made, meeting deadlines, and staying within the available budget.

Beyond that, a producer’s musical involvement can cover any number of roles. Some producers are also engineers, some aren’t, some co-write, some don’t, some play, arrange, compose, program etc.

One essential skill that all producers have is the ability to help an artist realise their musical vision, via whatever methods they have at their disposal.

A rough guide to production roles :

Band producer

Producing a band generally involves working with a group of musicians who are used to playing together, and have most, or all of their material already written. In this case there may be some pre-production, where band and producer will work together prior to recording sessions, to refine arrangements, iron out any musical problems, and make sure the band are as musically tight and together as possible. This process can save a great deal of studio time and money later down the line.

In the studio, the producer will be responsible for both the sound and the quality control, making sure the band perform to their highest level, finding ways to work around potential problems.

A good band producer can be the difference between a decent record and a great one.

Musician producer

Often involved in a project from the very start, can co-write material, work out musical arrangements, and often even plays on records.

This type of production is extremely involved, and the producer will work very closely with the artist/s to help bring a new record to life.

Hip-Hop/Urban producer

In most urban music the producer is the person that puts together the backing track, or Beat. Urban producers will often have a number of tracks waiting to find the right artist to collaborate with. If you are an urban artist, we can put together the right Beats to suit your style.

Arranger/mixer/fixer

Sometimes a track just needs something else, a new perspective, parts added, structure altered, a new approach to the sound? Whatever it is, musical problem solving is something that good producers excel at. Often a new perspective is the best way to turn your track into something really special.
